Having done a fair mount of carving in wood myself, I've always been highly impressed with the quality of the carvings done on carousels during the late 1800's and early 1900's. Of particular note to me were the works of M.C. Illions and Salvatore Cernigliaro. Even the flooring depicted came from a period carousel.
